Tips For Using Apparition™ Phantom Hunter and Masking Scents

Tip #1 - Pretreatment of Hunting Clothing

Far too many hunters fail at scent control before they even get out the door because they don't take care to ensure their hunting cloting is as close to scent free as possible. A good first step is to wash your clothing using one of the many scent elimination detergents available. We do not currently carry these products, so take your pick. Once your garments are washed, allow them to air dry, preferrably outside, for at lest 24 hours. Before bringing your cloting indoors, lightly spray them with one of our masking scent that is most similar to the area you'll be hunting. If you're unsure, Woodlands is always a safe bet. After spraying, put your garments in a scent free container or garbage bag until you're ready to head to the woods.

Tip #2 - Before the Hunt

Once you arrive at your hunting spot, immediately spray your hands with Phantom Hunter, and be sure to apply the product with your hands to all areas of exposed skin. It is also helpful to spray on the outside of your clothing under your arms and along your forearms where you're likely to wipe away sweat from walking. A light misting of one of our earth-based masking scents is also beneficial. Keep the bottle of Phantom Hunter in your hand, especially if it's a warm day, and you're likely to sweat. When it's hot, you'll need to apply it regularly. Once you arrive at your stand, complete the process by spraying down with masking scent, and also Phantom Hunter if it is still necessary.

Tip #3 - During the Hunt

Typically, it is not necessary to continue applying Phantom Hunter or one of our masking scents while on stand, with two exceptions. First, if it's early season or unseasonably warm, we recommend using Phantom Hunter every 15 minutes until you stop sweating. Second, if you're planning an all-day hunt, it is a good idea to freshen your cloting with masking scent about half-way through the hunt. As a general rule of thumb, you really can't use too much scent eliminator or earth-based masking scent.

Tip #4 - After the Hunt

Scent control does not end with the end of the hunt. Once you return home, we recommend spraying your clothing one final time with one of our masking scents, then putting them outside if possible until your next hunt. If it's not possible to hang your clothes outside, place them back into a scent free container until you're ready to use them again. If it was extremely warm and you sweated excessively, we recommend rewashing your clothing.

Tip #5 - Scent Control No-Nos

A lot of people ask if it's necessary to wait until you get to the woods to dress into your hunting gear. Our recommendation is to simply do what you feel comfortable with. Standing outside in your underwear in frigid temperatures isn't a lot of fun, but if you're willing to do it, it certainly can't hurt. If you don't choose to dress in the woods, you need to take special precautions to avoid "stinking up" your clothing. Here is a list of things to avoid when wearing your clothing prior to entering the woods:

Stopping for gas
Eating at home in your hunting clothing or at a restaurant
Drinking strong beverages that you could possibly spill on yourself
Using a powerful air freshener in your vehicle
Smoking or chewing snuff or tobacco
Playing with your pets
Hugging your spouse or girlfriend who may be wearing perfume or cologne (unless you've just begged to go hunting in the first place, of course)
